Writing Gratitude Was Akin To Rolling The Dice!

Kelly Johnson author and photographer of Gratitude Kelly Johnson is the author and photographer of Gratitude.

Gratitude is a beautiful, photographic coffee table book that expresses the rebirth of grateful moments shared between a mother and daughter. Featuring imagery of glorious flowers from beautiful gardens and joyful moments in Oregon, surrounded by quotes of love and wisdom. Gratitude is a story of a daughter who had the great fortune to have a mother who reverently taught her daughter to look beneath the surface of life to find Gratitude.

An excerpt page of Gratitude

Writing Gratitude was akin to rolling the dice, for it involved an intricate dance between chance and intention, uncertainty and creativity. Just as a roll of the dice determines the outcome of a game, embarking on the journey of writing a book brings forth a myriad of possibilities, each with its own unique set of risks and rewards.

Dice rolling

Like the tumbling dice, the initial spark of an idea takes flight, carried by the wind of inspiration. It is an act of courage and vulnerability, for every sentence penned is a gamble—a leap of faith into the unknown. With each roll of the dice, my imagination navigates unfamiliar territories, delving into the depths of the characters’ into the soul of my mother and the beauty of flowers, and me, the daughter with a keenness for learning, listening, and loving.

Writing is not for the faint-hearted. There are vast pieces of exposure involved. This is vastly heavy when you’re an introvert, which I am. But the brilliance of it is you connect with people and share magic, joy, passion, and beauty. You are letting people into your private space. A space that you held sacred. You are revealing your heart and soul to the unknown.

With each turn of the page, the dice continue to roll. The path may twist and turn unexpectedly, revealing hidden layers of the story. Like a gambler at the table, I, the writer, must adapt and trust in my creative instincts.

Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there is a meditative beauty in the act of writing. It is a dance between control and surrender, a harmonious balance between structure and spontaneity. Each word and sentence holds the potential to surprise, delight, and captivate both the writer and the reader.

Ultimately, the final outcome is not solely determined by the dice roll but by the writer’s dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion. It is the culmination of countless hours spent honing the craft, wrestling with self-doubt, and daring to breathe life into the story that stirs within. I have gratitude for the journey and gift of writing and telling a beautiful piece of my story.
